VAGUE TIME
“Terrible noise, arising in me and around.” January 29, 1918, A.Blok, from notes.
Voices, desultory tunes, scraps of convesration, wailing of the wind, gun shots, swearing, echo, screams and rattle. “No cross on your neck!” Sounds, sounds. Real and hallucinatory. Informational and parasitical. Noises, striking through “white noise” of time. “Listen to the music of revolution!”
Cacophony. A head filled with sounds. They crowd, press, demand recasting. They dissolve residual tunes of gypsy love-songs, like acid, in solution of drunkenness and hangover. Sound chaos of time searching a form to be incarnated. Something was born. Through simplifying, depreciation, Savoyarov’s primitivistic rhyme, through folklore of street songs and half-criminal couplets - something was born and it was more than just a total of sounds. Through sound, word gives birth to an image. And images crowd and lump into meanings. And even now, 90 years after, it evokes questions, discussions, interpretations - Blok’s poem “The Twelve”.

Meanings propagate by fission. And every new attempt to find a new interpretation of this poem leads to multiplying of its meanings. Brilliant lack of author’s evaluation of happening events automatically makes every reader to become a valuer. But every valuer is just a total sum of his own knowledge and delusions.
When I was working on this series my main purpose was to throw off a shell of a valuer. To sink into the material and let the past time flow through me freely; to combine images and give birth to new meanings. The series “Vague time’” is neither illustrative, nor it visualizes the characters from Blok’s poem. But it embodies my inner feelings after the immersion into the material of the time of revolution. And let the scraps of time fly away in the wind.
